Event Description

Join us for a special workshop led by artist Miriam Alarcón Avila, where participants will learn about the significance of alebrijes and create their own. Get an up-close look at examples from the Stanley's collection on view in the Visual Laboratory on the third floor. Alebrijes (pronounced: ah-leh-bree-hez) are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. These whimsical wood carvings from Oaxaca are a blend of Mexico’s rich sculptural traditions and intercultural exchange. The Stanley's collection of alebrijes range in theme from realistic humans and animals to mythical hybrids and creatures and elaborate three-dimensional scenes. This is a free, family-friendly workshop that is open for all to attend, including children, adults, and UI students. Space is limited; reserve your spot at https://uiowa.doubleknot.com/event/alebrijes-inspired-workshop/3114375.
