Event Description
Join Visiting Artist Kevin Corotis for an immersive, one-day workshop exploring the possibilities of combining wheel throwing and handbuilding to create a sculptural altered square teapot. Previous wheel-throwing experience is required. Students should be comfortable centering and throwing independently. Students will move between the wheel and table throughout the workshop, learning how to transform a simple wheel-thrown form into something unexpected. Beginning with wheel-thrown components, participants will alter, cut, and reshape their forms before incorporating handbuilt slab elements to create a distinctive square teapot. Kevin will demonstrate techniques for creating the teapot body, spout, and handle, including making spouts and handles on the wheel. Students will learn how individual components can be manipulated and assembled to create a cohesive form that balances structure with a more intuitive, sculptural approach. Drawing from Kevin’s own sculptural practice, the workshop encourages students to experiment with shape, movement, and construction. His work explores how simple forms can be broken apart and reassembled into complex, expressive structures—an approach that invites students to look at the wheel as a starting point. In This Workshop participants will be invited to: -Create an altered square teapot -Combine wheel throwing and slab building -Alter and reshape wheel-thrown forms -Create a teapot spout and lid on the wheel -Learn techniques for assembling and refining multiple components -Explore sculptural approaches to functional pottery -Experiment with form, structure, and surface The workshop includes: -4.5 hours of hands-on instruction with ceramic artist/Instructor Kevin Corotis -Live demonstrations covering wheel throwing, trimming, slab making techniques, and assemblage -Individual guidance and feedback throughout the workshop. -Use of ICCGS studio wheels, tools, and equipment during the workshop.
